Dysphoria (poetry)

“Dysphoria” by Mykell Hatcher-McLarin 4/20/14

And we’ve never been closer, you and I. All it took was silence and an infinite delay in me saying “I love the way you feel on my finger tips.” And we’ve never been closer, you and I. All it took was you ignoring the pain of growing out of a shell that limited my wingspan so I came down falling. And we’ve never been closer, you and I. All it took was your shrug of shoulders and the words, “I don’t really get it, so I don’t really care.” And we’ve never been closer, you and I. All it took was falling into a river from inside of a nightmare where the bed sheets drenched in sweat became my drowning. And we’ve never been closer, you and I. All it took was just enough, “you’re not good enough”s and that empty space in my heart where you could store them. And we’ve never been closer, you and I. All it took was nightfall to hear the sound of rainfall from my clouded eyes after you traded my umbrella for matches that wouldn’t light. And we’ve never been closer, you and I. All it took was a look in the mirror and gradual glances into my past that I didn’t want to be my present as I relapsed further from my future. And we’ve never been closer, you and I. And we’ve never been closer, you and I. And we’ve never been closer, you and I. And I can’t wait till we grow apart.
